The Han dynasty, which lasted from 206 BC to 220 AD, is often cited as the earliest known instance of hair braiding. During the Qing dynasty, the hairstyle was a crucial part of Chinese culture and tradition, and it helped define the nation’s identity.Ĭhinese culture has long valued the art of braiding. Members of the imperial family, for instance, sported a particular style of queue while commoners opted for a less ornate look. According to factors such as age, profession, and social standing, the queue had varying lengths and looks. There was also cultural and social significance to the hairstyle. The hairstyle was seen as a way to show respect for and identification with Chinese culture and customs, as well as a sign of obedience and loyalty. This hairstyle was mandated by the government as a means of social control and dynastic loyalty.Īmong other things, Chinese men could show their support for the Qing dynasty by sporting the queue hairstyle. All male Chinese citizens were required to adopt the hairstyle, and those who didn’t were threatened with death if they didn’t conform. The Qing government used the hairstyle as a tool for social control and surveillance. The Manchu used the queue hairstyle as a symbol of their superiority and continued commitment to their culture. Unlike the Han Chinese, whose hair is typically worn long and loose, the Manchu wear theirs in a braid. The Manchu people, who had recently conquered China, wanted to be easily distinguished from the Han Chinese, so they adopted a distinctive hairstyle. The hairstyle is an integral part of Chinese culture and played a crucial role in forging the Qing dynasty’s Chinese identity.ĭuring China’s Qing dynasty, the queue hairstyle served a number of functions. However, it still holds considerable significance in Chinese heritage. The Chinese public has moved on from the queue hairstyle. The new government actively pushed its citizens to abandon the practice, and in 1922 it was officially outlawed. With the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1912, the queue haircut began to go out of style. The hairstyle was worn by men of all social classes to show support for the Qing dynasty and for traditional Chinese values. The queue haircut persisted for a long time despite these obstacles. It was also a pain to wear, as the ponytail’s extra mass could lead to a stiff neck or headache. The constant washing and combing of hair was a major time sink. It wasn’t easy to maintain the queue hairstyle. The queue hairstyle, which revived braiding, was popular only during the Qing dynasty. The Tang dynasty, which ruled from 618 to 907 A.D., saw a decline in braiding’s popularity. Officials and educated men of the time period often sported braided hairstyles as a symbol of their status. The Han dynasty (206 BC–220 AD) saw the beginning of men in China styling their hair in braids. During the Qing dynasty, the queue hairstyle became an important part of Chinese identity, serving as a symbol of Chinese culture and tradition.Ĭhinese culture has long valued the art of braiding. There were some moral and ethical questions raised by the hairstyle, but it managed to stay in style for over two centuries. Many people during the Qing dynasty rebelled against the hairstyle by shaving their heads instead of adopting the queue. The hairstyle was seen as a symbol of Chinese subjugation by their Manchu rulers and, as such, was widely disliked by the Chinese people. There was some debate about the queue cut. It stood for both national pride and loyalty to the government. The queue hairstyle was a sign that Chinese men were willing to be ruled by the Manchus. The Qing government used the hairstyle as another surveillance tool to track the populace and spot potential rebels. The hairstyle became a political symbol in China during the Qing dynasty. The distinctive hairdo was a powerful symbol of Manchu superiority and cultural continuity. The queue hairstyle was imposed on the Chinese by the Manchu, who braided their hair to set themselves apart from the Han Chinese. The Manchus, who overran China in the middle of the 17th century, are responsible for popularizing the queue hairstyle. Symbols Of Chinese New Year Menu Toggle.

They’ve got the accents and vocal tics down, the guitar sounds are spot on, and their ability to seamlessly stitch holiday song and Beatles classic together is unparalleled. Rubber Band – Feliz Navidad (No Reply) Rubber Band – White Christmas (Ticket to Ride)Īll this is well and Beatlesy good but you haven’t heard anything till you hear the masters of this particular arcane genre, The Fab Four. The middle-eight break out to Lennon’s “Happy Xmas” was a nice touch too. The distinctive guitar hook wraps around the tune like a warm blanket. And then the decision to mix “Ticket to Ride” into “White Christmas was sheer brilliance. Like the creative combining of “Feliz Navidad” with “No Reply.” The latter adds some drama that the former sorely lacks. A lot of review attention at the time focused on the band’s reworking of “Last Christmas” to sound a bit like “Please Mister Postman.” The Wham!/Marvelettes mash-up didn’t grab me but there are other examples here where the synthesis works better. Their 1994 album Xmas! The Beatmas also offers 12 Beatles-re-engineered Christmas songs. Number two on our docket is Danish Beatles cover band Rubber Band. The vocal harmonies on this track are super and the harmonica runs are so Beatles but in other ways the synthesis doesn’t quite gel for me. There’s the distinctive “Please Please Me” harmonica and rhythm guitar end-of-verse turnarounds. Our featured choice from the LP is their take on “Joy to the World” which incorporates “Please Please Me” in various ways. In 2005 they released an album of them entitled 12 Greatest Carols (the cover riffs on The Beatles 20 Greatest Hits). Starting out in college in the 1980s they just kept getting together yearly, playing gigs and eventually recording some holiday tunes in a Beatles style. It’s easy to do but hard to do well, as our three fab yulesters musically demonstrate.įirst up, The Butties from Syracuse, New York. The point is meld the two as seamlessly as possible, typically maintaining the tune of the holiday song while putting it to a Beatles beat or adorning it with recognizable Beatles riffs. Here’s what they do: they mash together a holiday standard with some classic from the Beatles catalogue. Today’s bands fit the diagnosis and then some. Only certified Beatlemaniacs could come up with something as kooky as this and make it work. But I can’t help bringing together two of my favourite things on this special day: the Beatles and holiday music. Now I know many of you are probably jingle-exhausted after months of a festive sounds dogging you every time you ventured out in public. The best way to use it, from this point on, is to quickly skim through until you find a sample image that is similar to the kind of image you need to convert. You can see that they are more like typical strokes, that a sketch artist might make with pen, pencil or charcoal, etc.Īctually this is sort of a master tutorial, explaining some basic concepts, and guiding you to the particular tutorial you might need. I colored them red, to make it easier to see. The images on the right of the bold blue line, show how the paths look when traced by hand, with the Pen/Bezier or Pencil/Freehand tool. (The settings I used to create that auto-trace can be found in this tutorial.) So you can see that the image is made up of very detailed closed paths, rather than a series of single lines or strokes. (Only 7 can be seen in that section and 1 is the white background, in case you're counting.) I placed a red outline around the color which is selected, to help you see it better. Basically there are 8 scans creating 8 different colored compound paths (actually 8 shades of gray here) all stacked up on top of each other. In the end, it will pay off to learn how to use it, even if you just have one project to complete.ĭifference Between Auto-Trace and Hand-Trace But most of the time, the Pen/Bezier tool is best - even it if takes a little longer to learn. It was a super anti-climactic end that really sapped the joy out of the experience and if this was the intentional solution, I’m not sure how I was supposed to figure it out without mind-numbing trial and error.įor me it's not even that I have an issue with doing chaos theory and the challenges, even though I'm more sandbox type. The game then instantly jumped me up to 5 stars and I beat the JP section. It seemed like all that time, I just hadn’t sold enough of my assets to meet whatever criteria the game was after. Once my cash got up to about 1.5 mil, the hemorrhaging finally stopped. Finally, in a fit of frustration, I just started demolishing every building in the park. There was a notice at the bottom of the screen reminding me to sell fossils and buildings if my cash was depleted, but even trying that didn’t seem to work. No matter how many times I retried, this one storm would tank my park into bankruptcy, even with everything operating smoothly and a cushion of a couple mil. Even with all my problem dinos tranq’d, repairs made, and shops optimized, my money kept depleting well past the point where it had normally recovered after any other storm. The storm damage seemed like it was explicitly targeting my fences, in such a way that I wasn’t sure if the storm was scripted or a random event. I had weathered the climactic event fine, and my funds were recovering nicely, but within about 15 min my park got hit with a massive hurricane. Have you seen the kind of questions people asked on this sub about the first game? Some people are just plain stupid and can't grasp anything more complicated than tic tac toe. There are quite a few people who are running into gamebreaking bugs and glitches and a challenge you have to repeat due to crashes will sour any game. You can get into a position where the new mechanics are constantly repeating, such as having to manage constant infighting and injuries if you fail to manage your animals' dominance levels.įor some, the management gameplay is nothing more than an annoying obstacle to get to the sandbox gameplay they actually purchased the game for. The game doesn't adequately explain some of its new mechanics and you kind of have to stumble upon some of the correct ways to handle them. With Mergia at the helm of a jazz trio moving as a crackling, telepathic entity, Lalu Belu astonishes not by being a nostalgia trip but by sounding triumphantly in the present. On it, Mergia still sounds spry and roving on piano, accordion, and synthesizer, his melodic sense as acute and mesmerizing as ever. Discovery of an old tape in Bahir Dar, a tourist hotspot in northern Ethiopia, in 2013 ignited Mergia’s dormant career in the West, capped by Lala Belu, his first new album in decades. Take keyboardist/composer Hailu Mergia, a star in his native Ethiopia in the ’70s who moved to Washington, D.C. But the MP3 blog-turned-label Awesome Tapes From Africa bucked that trend, diligently digging through physical artifacts to discover true gems. Reissues of obscure albums ran rampant this decade, thanks in part to labels following the YouTube algorithms that guided listeners to styles they may have otherwise never found. This is the latest, greatest Iceage: a bit more romantic but as fiercely droll as ever. Over drunken drums that lead the rest of the band along by a rope, he snarls into the mic, grappling with the very public line of work that’s made him a minor heartthrob among the indie set. The permanently anguished Rønnenfelt offers up a clear example of his dark philosophy in the cabaret stunner “Showtime,” narrating the onstage suicide of a handsome young singer. Beyondless, the quartet’s most recent LP, saw them once again expanding their sound in service of their ever-growing ambition, this time incorporating manic violins, honky-tonk pianos, and, for the first time, a guest vocalist in Sky Ferreira. He was only 18 at the top of the decade, when he and his childhood friends were dubbed the Next Great Punk Band, and across four albums and countless shows, they put in the work needed to uphold the claim. With limbs flailing and sweat matting his hair, Iceage frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt grew up before our eyes. “All you had to do was listen,” she said. Legend has it, she hung up on the first interviewer she spoke to about the record-the question was about Shelton’s new partner, Gwen Stefani-and decided that she would do no press surrounding the album, letting the music speak for itself. For Lambert, redemption comes from buying a cheap pair of plastic sunglasses, by spending late nights alone at the bar, in knowing that she alone controls her destiny. Its songs are torch ballads and highway anthems with a live band that feels borne of late night jam sessions, raw and unglamorous. Her ambitious double album The Weight of These Wings carries on in a grand tradition of messy relationship statements: It has the grit of Tom Petty’s Wildflowers and the uncertainty of Bruce Springsteen’s Tunnel of Love, wrapped up in Lambert’s fiery, down-home charm. But when they divorced in 2015, the breakup encouraged her to go down a darker, more existential path. Miranda Lambert: The Weight of These Wings (2016)įor the first half of the decade, Miranda Lambert was a country superstar with a string of radio hits, a recurring spot on The Voice, and a picture-perfect marriage to fellow singer Blake Shelton. Listen/Buy: Rough Trade | Apple Music | Tidalġ89. It's music that rewards close attention in an age where that is increasingly rare. The wistfulness is often self-referential, as on “Snowed In at Wheeler Street,” a tale of star-crossed lovers with lyrics threaded with references to her old songs. The material is more wistful: Where Bush’s best singles have often been about having something beautiful that you’re about to lose, much of 50 Words for Snow addresses things that are already lost. 50 Words for Snow, named for the myth that the Inuit have such a vocabulary, boasts all of her trademark magical realism, fantastical lovers, and far-flung settings, but the songs are more quietly ambitious than past works-almost like chamber pieces. And she does so wide-eyed and full-heartedly, even painstakingly. On Kate Bush’s only studio album of the decade, she sings about catching a snowflake out of the sky, warning a hunted yeti, and sleeping with a dissolving snowman. If you do more than one calculation, be sure to click on the Clear Values button between attempts. The answer is returned in feet, inches and construction fractions (to 64ths) in the American mode while the Metric mode returns meters and decimal values. For example, you could enter 5 feet 6 inches as 5 in the feet box and 6 in the inches box, or just 5.5 in the feet box and no entry in the inches box.) In the metric mode, only the first box on length and width is used the system and calculator accept decimals. (If you already know the conversion of inches to a decimal, you may just enter it as feet. If you are uncertain as to the conversion, you may use our conversion tables for precision up to 64ths of an inch in decimal. Keep in mind that this is a decimal fraction for example. If you have a fraction of an inch, you may enter it. In the feet and inches mode (American system), enter your value of feet indicated as Feet, then the inches, if there are any, in the box indicated as Inches. Select the American or Metric number system first. This calculator is capable of use in the American system of feet and inches, and the metric system of meters. A little extra effort in the initial stages yields a much more professional structure in the end. (If you don't want to actually measure but can determine by a sting, both diagonals must be equal for a squared foundation.) Just a fraction of a degree deviation from 90 degrees, over 20 feet or more, is a substantial error in causing walls to not be straight or square. While protractors and T-Squares are very useful, the longer the distance for the measurement, the more accurate it is. Verification is true in that 9 plus 16 is 25, of which the square root is 5. It is also known in the construction industry as 3-4-5, meaning the if the length is 3 (squared = 9) and the width is 4 (squared = 16) then the diagonal is 5 (squared = 25). Reduced to simple construction terms, it says that the foundation length squared plus the foundation width squared equals the foundation diagonal distance (opposite corner to opposite corner) squared. (For example, if there are two numbers after the decimal point, then use 100, if there are three then use 1000, etc. (Be square or Repair.) The calculation is based on the Pythagorean Theorem. To convert a Decimal to a Fraction follow these steps: Step 1: Write down the decimal divided by 1, like this: decimal 1 Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. This calculator is designed to give the result of a math calculation to verify that a foundation (or room, truss foundation, or other 90 degree structure) is actually square and correct in layout. This post sums up my feelings almost word for word, especially the second paragraph about Brian. Reading through this thread and others, it's amazing how much I missed. I felt hollow afterward, but I imagine that's not dissimilar from how Henry would have felt. Everything about the ending made perfect sense to me. H&D aren't good people, so they don't necessarily deserve a happy, or even satisfying ending, just because I, the player, really want one. The ending was unsatisfying, but in the right way - it really parallels some of my own experiences, and while I wanted a happy ending for H&D, it's increasingly obvious as the game goes on that getting that will be difficult, if not impossible. It's beautiful, it's well-written, clearly well-designed, and I found a lot to which I could relate in H&D. Something that ultimately ended up being not all that outlandish tried to compete with wonderful characters and dialogue. I tried to rationalize it as the mystery being incidental to H&D's interactions, because that's what I was really interested in, but the mystery took centre stage. I actively looked forward to every chance I had to radio her, because I wanted to hear the conversation. To me, most things happening in the game that weren't interactions between Henry and Delilah were just simply not as interesting as their conversations. Cissy Jones' voice acting was top-shelf, and the chemistry between Henry and Delilah was magnificent. I think, ultimately, my biggest problem was that Delilah was fascinating to me, so I spent most of my time thinking about her character and sort of skipping over the other details. I didn't get enough of a chance to connect with Ned to care about his motivations. "Oh, I guess I was supposed to be paying more attention to this guy and not trying to invent wild theories in my head". When I discovered his body, it didn't really affect me all that much. So when I discovered his hideout, it was neat, and it made sense in the context of his character, but I just couldn't tell if I should be paying more attention to it or not. I was looking for something bigger than Brian, so I sort of glossed over the stories Delilah told, just taking them more as world-building than as a core plot point. Part of my problem was that I didn't really connect with Brian. It makes perfect sense, but it is a bit anticlimactic. It sets up a Lost-style mystery, and in the end, it's not really that mysterious at all. If you start with the story of a loved one losing everything to a mental disease and end with a crazy scifi conspiracy where you get the girl, what was the point of the introduction? It was always a story about Henry trying to forget himself in the wilderness for a time before ultimately having to go home and stop running away from his problems, and his journey is reflected in both Ned and Delilah.I suspended my disbelief long enough such that the actual reveal of what Ned was up to out there made logical sense, but my main issue was that it didn't really impact me all that much. Henry and Delilah were like ships passing in the night, they were never going to meet it would have cheapened the whole thing.Įven though I fully bought into the conspiracy for a while, I'm not sure how anyone could really truly expect that the game's ending would be some larger than life genre thing when it started with the most brutal gut-punch of realism I've ever experienced in a game. I'm not sure how much of it was critical path and how much of it was because I spent so much damn time exploring, but I felt like they were brought up often enough to the point where Ned being involved was something in the back of my mind for a while.įrom podcasts they've been on it seems like Campo Santo knew that the ending would be divisive because it's not the kind of story often told, but to me that's always been the whole point of the game. I played about 7 hours over the course of three nights and felt like I was familiar enough with Ned and Brian long before the body reveal to have that moment hit home for me. I mean I've said it before but I disagree with people who think that the Ned and Brian stuff came out of nowhere. |
